Big Catch by Novomatic

We’re not all that sure why Novomatic is so fascinated with setting its slots in the water, although that’s certainly not a developer problem as if you feel like splashing around on the reels then virtually every developer has you covered. In fairness, Dolphin’s Pearl Deluxe is a fun jaunt under the sea and Lord of the Ocean puts a serious spin on things. Here, Big Catch lands somewhere in between where the focus is not necessarily on the fish, but more on the fishing. Even that’s not overly unique with games like Microgaming’s Alaskan Fishing also managing to fit the bill, but let’s see what this game has in store to make it special.

For starters, there’s plenty of action from the moment players decide between manual spins and auto play. Twenty win lines ensure that the prizes can stack up at a reasonable rate and you’ve got just as much control over your stake as you’ll be accustomed to if you’re a regular player of Novomatic video slots. The pink starfish symbol looks a little odd but you’ll always be pleased to see him as he fills in the gaps in winning combinations as a wild, with the small caveat that he’ll only appear on reels three, four and five.

Just as on other Novomatic slots such as Reel King, Big Catch employs the concept of a randomly awarded bonus game rather than waiting around for scatters to land. The act of triggering the feature is unmistakable as the reels fill with water while all the symbols disappear from the board. In their place comes a fishing hook together with a separate start button. Hitting this will see the hook descending to grab a fish from the bottom of the screen. As you’d expect, the bigger the fish the better the prize, with a top end of a hundred times your stake. These casts continue until you manage to fish up the boot, at which point it is back to the base game.

There is certainly something to be said for any online slot that does away with scatters in favour of a randomly triggered round, especially if you’re the kind of player that prefers it to either hit or not rather than taunting you with two feature symbols on the board! Big Catch is, by all accounts, a fairly casual game but if that sounds like your idea of a good time then you’re sure to be thrilled with the action on offer here!
